Shine Your Light a été conçu comme un hymne émancipateur après que l'artiste eut lu un message de fan évoquant le dépassement du doute de soi. La ligne de slap bass qui porte le morceau a été enregistrée avec une Music Man StingRay vintage via un ampli à lampes — la première prise a été retenue sur l'enregistrement final. L'arrangement de cuivres a été confié à un ami ayant travaillé avec Tower of Power, conférant au titre ses références funk authentiques. Les paroles ont volontairement été écrites à la deuxième personne (« You shine your light ») pour créer un lien direct et personnel avec chaque auditeur.
